Islanders Take Tight Tilt, 2-1
|
The rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of Honolulu fans at Honolulu Stadium.
The Honolulu Islanders got a magnificent performance from pitcher Frank Viola, who muffled the Bakersfield offense en route to a tight 2-1 Islanders win at Honolulu Stadium. Will Smith earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. His record is now 4-1. Dave Otto recorded the save, his 1st.
Honolulu shortstop Johnnie LeMaster gave his club a productive at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd and the Islanders trailing 1-0, LeMaster hit a single.
"It'd be nice to win by four or five runs," LeMaster said, "instead of holding our breath the whole game."
The win for the Islanders raised their record to 24-23.
