The El Paso Sun Kings withstood an impressive performance by Chattanooga left fielder Walt Williams to defeat the Rats, 9-8, at Engel Stadium. Williams went 6 for 8 with a home run, a double, and 4 singles, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. El Paso reliever John Strohmayer picked up the win to move to 1-1. Nelson Cruz suffered the loss. The win lifted the El Paso record to 30-22.

Tommy Davis's at-bat in the top of the 15th was significant, coming with the bases empty and the game tied, 8-8. The El Paso third baseman hit a solo home run off Nelson Cruz to put the Sun Kings up.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Sun Kings manager Will Croskey. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
