Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Chattanooga Rats and the Bakersfield Blaze. Chattanooga won it, 2-1. Chattanooga starter Johnny Podres was in command. Felipe Rivero notched the win in relief. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. His record now sits at 3-3. The Rats go to 27-42 with the win.

When he came to bat in the bottom of the tenth, Art Shamsky had a chance to be the hero. Bakersfield pitcher Cla Meredith had other ideas. But with one out, Shamsky hit a sacrifice fly. The Rats had themselves a dramatic win.

"The game of baseball will test you," said Ryan Metzler, the Chattanooga skipper. "This one tested us."
