Both teams had their chances, but the Cienfuegos Elefantes eventually prevailed.
Cienfuegos Elefantes right-hander Mike Smithson pitched a good game against the Bakersfield Blaze at Estadio 5 de Septiembre, leading his team to victory, 4-3. Aurelio Monteagudo, now 5-3, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings. Kelvin Herrera earned the save, his 11th in 15 tries.
A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when designated hitter Lefty O'Doul, who is tied for 8th in the AMN in home runs with 24, hit a run-scoring single. The Elefantes went on to win.
"Some of the guys in here work hard, some of the guys just kind of fall out of bed and get it done. Whatever works I guess, we won this one," Smithson told the Cienfuegos Citizen.
The victory puts Cienfuegos at 37-67.
