Marte and Barrett Suspended for Free-for-All
Wednesday, May 23rd , 2001
After an intense confrontation, both the Redbirds Starling Marte and the Aces Red Barrett were handed their punishments today. The league commissioner's office issued suspensions for an on-the-field conflict that occurred at a recent Louisville-Las Vegas game. Starling Marte will miss 5 games, while Red Barrett was suspended for 6 games.
"Sometimes we go too far and have to pay the consequences," Starling Marte commented later. "Hopefully cooler heads will prevail the next time we play."
Marte is batting .329 with 7 home runs and 25 RBIs this season.
Barrett has made 6 starts so far this year and put up a 1-4 won-lost record with a 7.16 ERA. In 32.2 innings he has allowed 41 hits, walked 4 and struck out 27.
