Today was Tommy de la Cruz's turn in the rotation for the New Orleans Pelicans and he made the most of it, shutting out the Toronto Maple Leafs on 1 hit.
The 33-year-old right-hander led the Pelicans to an easy 7-0 victory, allowing no walks and tallying 10 strikeouts.
"I hope we miss him next time," Toronto manager Conor Jennings said. "de la Cruz certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."
de la Cruz has made 13 starts, tossed 87.1 innings, struck out 77 batters and walked 19. His record is 5-6 with a 4.23 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .223 batting average.
