3 Boomers for Johnston
Monday, June 25th , 2001
St. Louis Blues left fielder Wade Johnston put on a dazzling display of power at Kauffman Stadium against the Norfolk Tides. In the 15-2 Blues victory, Johnston penned his name into the record books, slamming a trio of home runs in one of baseball's finest single-day efforts.
"He can hit them out anywhere, right, center, left, it doesn't matter," Norfolk manager Ian Siebert said. "He's super strong and stays on the ball so well."
Along with his three home runs, the 22-year-old had 5 hits in 6 at-bats, 9 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
"Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off," Johnston said after the game, when asked about his hitting philosophy. "The right pitch will come, and when it does, be prepared to run the bases. Or trot around them, like I did today."
Wade Johnston hit a two-run home run off Ray Fontenot in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off Ray Fontenot in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off John Burkett in the 9th.
