League Suspends Thompson and Ruether for Fisticuffs Friday, June 29th , 2001 Yesterday at SkyDome Robby Thompson and Dutch Ruether got into each other's space and then into each other's face. They began to grapple and fell to the ground. That's when it boiled over into a full-fledged bench-clearing tussle between the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Bees. Reason finally prevailed as the umpires restored order. After much discussion, only the two major combatants were ejected from the game. Today the league office notified the ballclubs that Thompson will have to sit out 4 while Ruether would be given a 9-game suspension for their roles in the brawl. Thus far this season, Thompson has hit .246 with 12 home runs, 37 RBIs and scored 28 times. Ruether has taken the mound for 5 relief appearances this season, nailing down no saves while notching a 0-0 record with a 12.36 ERA. The San Jose reliever has limited opposing batters to a .407 batting average. |
