Blue Birds Not Competitive in 6-0 Loss to Montréal
Wednesday, August 29th , 2001
Mickey Mahler of the Montréal Expos was on top of his game.

The 33-year-old tantalized the Columbus Blue Birds with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 6-0.

"He had the changeup working," Columbus manager Tristan Magee said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Montréal hurler had 2 strikeouts, gave up 3 walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Mahler told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Up to now Mahler has compiled an ERA of 6.06 with a 9-4 mark over 19 starts. He has 110 strikeouts in 133.2 innings and has held opponents to a .311 batting average.
