Mullane Leads Hartford to 1-0 Win Over St. Louis
Sunday, September 16th , 2001
Tony Mullane of the Hartford Dark Blues was on top of his game.

The 30-year-old tantalized the St. Louis Blues with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.

"He had the changeup working," St. Louis manager Ernie Lyons said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Hartford hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Mullane told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Mullane has posted a 7-6 record for the year with a 3.78 ERA. Teams are hitting .237 against him and he has rung up 117 strikeouts in 114.1 innings.
