Rowdy Players Suspended by League
Wednesday, June 28th , 2000
After an intense confrontation, both the Red Caps Jordy Mercer and the Bronchos Miguel Batista were handed their punishments today. The league commissioner's office issued suspensions for an on-the-field conflict that occurred at a recent Jacksonville-Calgary game. Jordy Mercer will miss 5 games, while Miguel Batista was suspended for 6 games.
"Sometimes we go too far and have to pay the consequences," Jordy Mercer commented later. "Hopefully cooler heads will prevail the next time we play."
So far on the season Mercer is hitting .294 with 1 home run, 14 RBIs and 9 runs scored. He has 32 hits and played in 45 games.
To date this season Batista sports a 3-2 mark with a 4.68 ERA in 5 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .244 batting average and has 56 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.
