The performance of Ted Williams proved critical in helping Memphis beat Portland, 7-5. The Red Sox left fielder was 4-4 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2. Heath Bell, now 3-4, picked up the win in relief. He allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 2.1 innings.

Gabby Hartnett had a key at-bat with one out in the top of the eighth for Memphis. With the bases loaded and the Red Sox leading 6-5, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run.
