Even as a kid, Earl S Smith said his coaches told him the key to hitting was making contact, and letting everything else flow from there. At Ballpark at St. George today, Smith showed how well he learned that lesson.

The 31-year-old catcher had 5 hits in 6 at-bats for the St. Paul Colored Gophers, helping his team knock off the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 32-10.

"They always said, just keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing, make contact and you never know what will happen," he said. "That's all I did today."

Earl S Smith struck out in the 1st, walked in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Ian Kennedy in the 6th, hit a GRAND SLAM off Dan Otero in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Matt Merullo in the 7th, singled in the 8th and walked in the 9th.
