The Birmingham Black Barons spoiled a good performance by New York first baseman Will Clark, bumping off New York, 7-6, at Polo Grounds. Clark went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Birmingham reliever Alex Malloy was the winner. His record is now 2-0. Robb Nen took the loss. Harley Young, credited with the save, is now 7 for 9 in save opportunities.

Gene Tenace came through with a big-time hit for Birmingham. The designated hitter smacked a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to give his team the lead, 7-6. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said New York manager Daniel Makonnen. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."

The Birmingham winning streak has reached 4 games.
