The Philadelphia Pythians defeated the St. Paul Colored Gophers, 5-4, at Recreation Park. Philadelphia catcher Clay Dalrymple had a superb performance. He was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs. Picking up the win was Rick Mahler. He went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. The right--hander struck out 4 and walked 1. Jim Roland earned the save, his 11th.

The Pythians got an important contribution from designated hitter George Watkins, who in the bottom of the third hit a first pitch slider into right for a 2-run home run. It was his 20th home run of the season and put the Pythians ahead, 2-1.

"I try to not think too much," said Dalrymple.

With the win, Philadelphia raised its record to 37-29.
