Pythians Lose By a Run at St. Paul, 4-3
|
The St. Paul Colored Gophers topped the Philadelphia Pythians, 4-3, with designated hitter Earl S Smith playing a big role. Smith went 3-4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 for the Colored Gophers in the win. Bill Wegman got the win, improving to 11-5. He held the Pythians to 3 runs on 5 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 6 and walking 3. St. Paul is rocking and rolling at 67-31.
Greg Gagne had a big 2-run home run for the Colored Gophers in the bottom of the third inning. With St. Paul trailing 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he got a fastball from George Brunet and swatted a home run to left-center. It was his 27th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Colored Gophers ahead, 3-2.
After the game, St. Paul manager Nick Frias applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said.
