Black Barons Beaten By Gothams, 5-3
|
Polo Grounds was the site of a competitive game between the Birmingham Black Barons and New York Gothams.
The New York Gothams defeated the Birmingham Black Barons, 5-3. Left Fielder Don Buford deserved a large share of the credit. Buford was 3-4 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Gothams. Mike Norris picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 4-4. Greg Maddux suffered the loss. Brian Wilson got the save, his 15th in 19 chances.
New York took a 4-3 lead on Jim Ray Hart's 4th home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Hart hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Birmingham pitcher Greg Maddux visibly frustrated.
Buford said his team "played with focus."
At 54-59, the Gothams find themselves in last place in the National League Effa Manley Division.
