Kauff gets 5 RBI to Light Gothams Fuse
The performance of Benny Kauff proved critical in helping New York beat Birmingham, 16-9. The Gothams designated hitter went 2-5 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 and driving in 5. The winner in relief was Pete Donohue. He is now 1-0. The right-hander allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2.2 innings. The Gothams, at 55-61, inhabit last place in the National League Effa Manley Division.

Willie Mays had a big 2-run double for the Gothams in the top of the sixth inning. With New York leading 7-6 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from 26-year old right-handed pitcher Rube Melton and swatted a double to center. It was his 26th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Gothams ahead, 9-6.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Mays, "one at-bat at a time."
