Black Yankees Beat Baltimore, 6-5
|
The New York Black Yankees had to overcome a fine effort from Baltimore pitcher Bill Byrd to grab a narrow 6-5 win at Camden Yards. Byrd went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs. With the victory, the Black Yankees upped their record to 60-56.
Had Thurman Munson not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Munson hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Black Yankees.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Baltimore manager Daniel Makonnen. "But we decided not to take it."
