Colt 45s Lose at Home, 4-2
|
Starting pitcher Lefty Gomez was a major factor in the 4-2 Birmingham Black Barons triumph over the Houston Colt 45s. Gomez picked up the win for Birmingham, going 6.2 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 2 hits. He now sports a record of 8-7. Birmingham occupies last place in the National League Marvin Miller Division at 55-62.
Birmingham used a clutch at-bat from Eddie Mathews to capture the win. The third baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Black Barons ahead, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"Nervous? No," said Mathews. "It was my time to shine."
