Late Rally by Spiders Secures 3-1 Win
|
Cleveland got a first-rate effort from pitcher Cy Young, who frustrated Chicago hitters en route to a 3-1 Spiders triumph at South Side Park. Cleveland reliever Cory Gearrin was the winner. His record is now 2-8. Hoyt Wilhelm took the loss. Terry Adams was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 27 of 33 save opportunities.
Cleveland used the clutch hitting of John Ellis to capture the win. The catcher drilled a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Spiders ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"I'm just happy to help the team win," Ellis told the Cleveland Bulletin.
Cleveland goes to 66-52. The win puts them 5½ games up in their division.
