The Homestead Grays got a sterling performance from third baseman Andy Van Slyke, but the Birmingham Black Barons still prevailed, 8-5. Van Slyke went 2-3 with 2 home runs and a walk. Harley Young got the save, his 9th in 11 chances. Birmingham, at 57-64, sits in last place in the National League Marvin Miller Division.

Troy Tulowitzki's at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning was a big one for Birmingham. Coming to bat with no one out, runners on 1st and 2nd and Birmingham trailing 4-3, the shortstop hit a run-scoring single.

"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Tulowitzki.
