Cleveland Wins, 3-2, Over Red Sox
|
The Cleveland Spiders picked up a win at League Park, knocking off the Memphis Red Sox, 3-2, in 10 innings. Starting pitcher Pat Malone played a key role in the triumph. Cleveland reliever Cory Gearrin picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Heath Bell absorbed the loss. The Red Sox drop to 5-6 and continue their inconsistent start to the 2001 season.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 29-year old first baseman Lance Berkman had a real shot to win the game. Memphis pitcher Jonathan Papelbon was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Berkman hit a run-scoring single. The Spiders had a walk-off triumph.
After the game, Cleveland manager Daniel Makonnen applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
