New York Loss Takes Shine Off Schmidt Performance
The New York Black Yankees could not turn a fine performance from third baseman Mike Schmidt into a win. Instead, the Baltimore Black Sox prevailed, 11-10. Schmidt hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Baltimore pitcher R A Dickey got the win, upping his record to 1-2. Goose Gossage got the loss. Buddy Groom converted his 6th save in 8 tries.

Baltimore needed the clutch hitting of Curt Blefary to seal the deal. The catcher swatted a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Black Sox on top, 11-10. For the game, Blefary had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"We were the better team today. Maybe that won't be the case next game, but we'll enjoy it for now," Blefary told the Baltimore Today.

With the win, the Black Sox improved to 52-70.
