Black Barons Get Clutch Win Versus Kansas City
The Birmingham Black Barons had to overcome a fine effort from Kansas City pitcher José Rijo to win, 4-3, at Rickwood Field. Rijo went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs. The first-place Monarchs now sit at 62-62.

Birmingham got a knockout punch from Eddie Mathews. The third baseman hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

"We had the game right there for the taking," said Kansas City manager Daniel Makonnen. "But we decided not to take it."
