Thome Goes Deep Twice in 7-6 Cuban Giants Win
The timely hitting of Jim Thome helped the Miami Cuban Giants down the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-6. Thome slugged 2 home runs for the Cuban Giants. José Méndez, the winning pitcher, improved to 11-5. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7 and walking 3. Jonathan Papelbon notched his 4th save in 4 chances.

The Cuban Giants got a big at-bat from catcher Iván Rodríguez. For the game, Rodríguez was 1 for 2 with a home run, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 23rd home run of the season gave Miami a 3-1 lead.

"This is a great group to be a part of, and it's a big win for us," Rodríguez told the Miami Today.

The Cuban Giants go to 63-66, putting them second in the American League Cumberland Posey Division.
