Detroit Wolverines starter Charlie Root turned in an exceptional performance against the Portland Sea Dogs at Griffith Stadium, resulting in a Detroit win, 4-2. The winning pitcher was Root, now 11-8. He tossed 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 9. Mike Henneman, credited with the save, is now 20 for 23 in save opportunities.
Detroit used a well-timed hit by Hank Greenberg to capture the win. The first baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"Charlie gave us everything he had," said Detroit manager Daniel Makonnen.
The victory gives Detroit a record of 67-65.
