Black Yankees Get Past Miami for 5-4 Win
|
Miami got a terrific game from third baseman Gary Sheffield. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to New York, 5-4. Sheffield went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs. New York reliever David Robertson was the winner. His record is now 1-1. The losing pitcher was Barry Latman. Goose Gossage collected save number 1.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Mike Schmidt came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Miami pitcher Barry Latman, he hit a 2-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 5-4.
"If we keep winning the close games," Schmidt said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."
The win puts New York at 10-6.
