Black Yankees Stun Royal Giants, 4-1
|
The Black Yankees grabbed a win, 4-1, at Ebbets Field, overcoming a fine effort from Brooklyn pitcher Don Drysdale. Drysdale went 8.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. Gary Lavelle earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. His record is now 2-3. Aroldis Chapman notched his 12th save in 13 chances.
New York used the timely hitting of Mickey Mantle to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Black Yankees on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Mantle told the New York Citizen.
The triumph puts New York at 77-65 for the season.
