Mathews Slugs Black Barons to 9-4 Win
|
With third baseman Eddie Mathews leading the charge, the Birmingham Black Barons defeated the Indianapolis ABCs, 9-4, at Crosley Field. Mathews, who is on pace for 101 RBI this season, went 2-4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 3 and driving in 3. Slim Embrey claimed the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. His record stands at 1-0. With the win over Indianapolis, the Black Barons improved to 68-76.
In the top of the eighth, the Black Barons grabbed the lead when Mathews hit his 46th home run of the season. The 2-run home run off Rob Murphy made it 4-3, Birmingham.
"We didn't pitch good, and when you don't pitch good, you lose," said Indianapolis manager Daniel Makonnen.
