Jim Thome made an impact in the 6-5 Miami win over Portland. Thome, who is on pace to hit 58 home runs this season, went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI. Ricky Nolasco converted his 23rd save in 29 tries. The second-place Cuban Giants now have a record of 71-74.

Had Thome not come through in the top of the ninth, who knows how the game would've ended? But with two down, Thome hit a run-scoring single. The Cuban Giants took the lead, 6-5, and never looked back.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Thome.
