Soggy conditions did not keep Birmingham and Ottawa from playing their scheduled game.

The Birmingham Black Barons defeated the Ottawa Mounties, 8-5, at Rickwood Field. Leading the charge for Birmingham was catcher Jim Pagliaroni. He was 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Birmingham reliever Lefty Gomez was the winner. His record is now 9-8. Al Orth took the loss. Harley Young recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 11 for 14.

The Black Barons got a big hit from second baseman Cupid Childs. In the bottom of the sixth, Childs smacked a 2-run double off Ottawa pitcher Al Orth. It was his 33rd double of the season. Suddenly, the Black Barons were ahead, 5-4.

"Very pleased with the effort on our side," said Childs.

Birmingham is now 71-79. Ottawa is 70-81.
