Behind a solid performance from third baseman Eddie Mathews, the Birmingham Black Barons defeated the Indianapolis ABCs, 5-1. Mathews belted 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice for the Black Barons. John Malarkey was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 1 run on 4 hits, with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts. Birmingham goes to 8-9.

With Birmingham trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Mathews hit a fastball from Dolf Luque for a 2-run home run. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Black Barons ahead, 2-1.
