The skies opened up and the rain fell at Polo Grounds.

The Birmingham Black Barons got a magnificent effort from pitcher Lefty Gomez, who kept New York hitters in check en route to a 3-1 Black Barons win at Polo Grounds. Picking up the save was Harley Young, his 2nd.

Birmingham used the clutch hitting of Jim Pagliaroni to snag the win. The catcher drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Black Barons ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.

"I just kind of blacked out and executed my pitches," said Gomez.

The Black Barons raised their record to 2-1.
