Black Barons Popped by ABCs, 8-3
Indianapolis beat Birmingham on the strength of starting pitcher Johnny Cueto's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 8-3. Cueto, now 6-1, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 9, walking 2, and allowing 3 runs. The Black Barons, now 12-25, have lost 5 straight.

The Black Barons had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the ABCs going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old catcher Johnny Bench came to the plate. Bench hit a 2-run home run on a 2-2 fastball from Birmingham hurler Greg Maddux. It was Bench's 8th home run of the year.

"Johnny executed his pitches at a high level," said Indianapolis manager Daniel Makonnen.
