Gooden Skunks Black Yankees
|
Dwight Gooden of the Los Angeles Angels was on top of his game.
The 22-year-old tantalized the New York Black Yankees with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," New York manager Daniel Makonnen said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Los Angeles hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.
Gooden told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
To this point in the season, Gooden shows a 4-2 record, 7 starts, 47 innings, 38 strikeouts and a 1.72 ERA.
