Sea Lions Win, 5-2, Versus New York
|
Yankee Stadium was the site of the home opener for the New York Black Yankees. The contest featured a prime matchup between Lefty Grove of the visiting San Francisco Sea Lions and Andy Pettitte of the Black Yankees. The final score was 5-2, the Sea Lions getting the win. Andy Pettitte turned in the best performance. Trevor Hoffman, now 1-0, was credited with the win in 0.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 1 and walking 1. Rod Beck recorded the save, his 1st.
San Francisco used the hitting of Turkey Stearnes to pick up the win. The center fielder clubbed a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Sea Lions on top, 3-2. For the game, Stearnes had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"It was just a matter of executing," said San Francisco manager Daniel Makonnen.
