Indianapolis Defeated By Monarchs, 3-0
|
The Kansas City Monarchs banked on Smokey Joe Wood and he turned in a masterful performance. The right-hander kept the Indianapolis hitters in check. The final score was 3-0, Monarchs. Wood picked up the win for Kansas City, going 7.2 innings. He gave up no runs on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. The win has Kansas City at 2-2.
Ozzie Smith had a big run-scoring double for the Monarchs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Kansas City leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he got a changeup from 26-year old left-handed pitcher Guy White and swatted a double to right. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Monarchs ahead, 2-0.
In postgame comments to the Kansas City Today, Wood said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
