New York and Houston duked it out and the Gothams came out victorious.

Willie Mays was a major factor in the 9-8 New York win over Houston. The Gothams center fielder hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 times and driving in 4. Brian Wilson got the save, his 21st in 26 chances.

With New York leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Mays hit a slider from Roy Oswalt for a 2-run home run. It was his 48th home run of the season and put the Gothams ahead, 3-0.

"There's a lot of passion in our clubhouse," said Mays. "When we put it together we're a great ball club."

New York, at 74-83, occupies 4th place in the National League Effa Manley Division.
