The Homestead Grays got a superb performance from catcher Josh Gibson, but the Birmingham Black Barons still won the game, 6-5. Gibson hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Harley Young converted his 13th save in 16 tries. Birmingham has a record of 73-84, placing them last in the National League Marvin Miller Division.
With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Paul Konerko put Birmingham in front, 5-3, with a 2-run single. The Black Barons went on to win the ballgame.
"It wasn't our best performance," said Konerko, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
