Mounties Suffer 5-2 Road Loss
|
The Birmingham Black Barons dealt the Ottawa Mounties a 5-2 loss at Rickwood Field. Eddie Mathews was the star on offense. He went 2-3 with 2 home runs and a walk. Lefty Gomez, the winning pitcher, improved to 3-5. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 1. Juan Rincón sewed up the save, his 6th.
J P Arencibia, the 12th overall pick in the 2000 draft, chipped in a solo home run for Birmingham in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the catcher had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.
"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Arencibia.
With the win, the Black Barons are 18-35.
