The Houston Colt 45s could not turn a fine performance from catcher Will Smith into a win. Instead, the New York Gothams prevailed, 9-7. Smith went 2-4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Brian Wilson got the save, his 22nd in 27 chances. New York is now 75-84, Houston 82-77.

New York used a well-timed hit by Robby Thompson to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Gothams ahead, 6-3. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.

"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Thompson. "You've got to get results."
