The Cleveland Spiders moved to within one game of the Divisional Playoffs, downing the visiting New York Black Yankees at League Park by a score of 8-1. Spiders shortstop Arky Vaughan did some major damage. He went 3-5 with 2 home runs and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. The win gives the Spiders a 3-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Wild Card Round.

Lance Berkman, who finished 2nd in the AL in RBI with 143 in 2001, chipped in a 3-run home run for Cleveland in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in.

"We're one game closer to our goal," Cleveland manager Daniel Makonnen said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland.
