Sheffield Steals Spotlight, But Last Laugh Belongs to Detroit
The Detroit Wolverines weathered a fine game by Miami third baseman Gary Sheffield to upend the Cuban Giants, 6-5, at Tiger Stadium. Sheffield slugged 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice. Detroit reliever Buddy Napier snagged the win, upping his record to 2-1. Sandy Consuegra shouldered the loss. Miami, at 33-36, has lost 5 straight.

Detroit took a 6-5 lead on Hank Greenberg's 23rd home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Greenberg hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Miami pitcher Sandy Consuegra visibly frustrated.

"We're in a little bit of a dry spell," said Miami manager Daniel Makonnen.
