The Homestead Grays put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Houston Colt 45s in the season opener at Forbes Field. Third Baseman Judy Johnson won plaudits for Homestead. He went 3 for 4 with a triple, 2 doubles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3.

With Homestead trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Johnson hit a curveball from Dock Ellis for a 2-run double. It was his 2nd double of the season and put the Grays ahead, 2-1.

"It's nice to step up when your team needs you," said Johnson.
