Gothams Suffer 7-4 Setback
|
The New York Gothams got a superb performance from pitcher Pete Donohue. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Chicago. The American Giants won the game, 7-4. Donohue threw 5.2 innings of 2-hit ball. Chicago reliever Hoyt Wilhelm got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Robb Nen was tagged with the loss. Chicago now has a record of 46-35 with the win.
Chicago used a timely hit from Dick Allen to get the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run double in the top of the eighth inning to put the American Giants ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it made an impact.
In comments to the Chicago Daily, Allen admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
