House of David Prevail, 2-1, Over Birmingham
|
The exploits of second baseman Ryne Sandberg, who is tied for 4th in the NL in home runs with 28, helped the Wandering House of David defeat the Birmingham Black Barons, 2-1. Sandberg hit 2 home runs. Karl Spooner notched the win in relief. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. His record now sits at 1-1. Lee Smith got the save, his 5th in 6 chances.
Sandberg had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the seventh. On a 3-1 fastball from John Malarkey, he banged a solo home run to left, giving the House of David a 2-1 lead. It was the 28th home run of the year for Sandberg.
"Bottom line," said Birmingham skipper Daniel Makonnen, "we didn't play well enough to win."
Wandering has now won 3 in a row.
