The Miami Cuban Giants picked up a win at Griffith Stadium, dropping the Portland Sea Dogs, 6-2. José Méndez, who is tied for 7th in the AL in quality starts with 9, was the difference-maker. Méndez got the win, improving to 8-4. He gave up 4 hits and walked 2 over 8.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs. Miami is now 44-46.

Miami used a clutch at-bat from Gary Sheffield to capture the win. The third baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Cuban Giants ahead, 5-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"The only difference is executing pitches and not executing pitches," said Méndez. "When you don't execute, you get beat. When you execute, you usually give your team a chance to win."
