American Giants Win Thriller, 2-1
|
The Houston Colt 45s got a sterling performance from pitcher Bones Ely, but the Chicago American Giants still prevailed, 2-1. Ely threw 7.1 innings of 3-hit ball. Chicago reliever Hoyt Wilhelm picked up the win to move to 2-0. Mark Melancon suffered the loss. The victory gives Chicago a record of 52-40.
Dick Allen was the walk-off hero for Chicago. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the American Giants third baseman hit a dramatic solo home run to send the teams home.
"There are no moral victories," said losing manager Daniel Makonnen.
