Red-Hot Charleston Scorches Black Barons
Sunday, May 13th , 2001
Even as a kid, Oscar Charleston said his coaches told him the key to hitting was making contact, and letting everything else flow from there. At Crosley Field, Charleston showed how well he learned that lesson.

The 20-year-old center fielder had 5 hits in 5 at-bats for the Indianapolis ABCs, helping his team knock off the Birmingham Black Barons by a score of 7-5.

"They always said, just keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing, make contact and you never know what will happen," he said. "That's all I did."

Oscar Charleston tripled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 10th.

Thus far in 2001, Charleston is hitting .310 with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs, 22 runs scored and has compiled a .364 OBP.
